An autorickshaw driver, who was involved in multiple cases of mobile phone theft, was arrested by the Delhi Police from Rajiv Chowk Metro Station, it said on Friday.
The accused, 43-year-old Manoj Gupta, was caught loitering suspiciously near the metro station’s Blue Line on Thursday. Three expensive mobile phones were confiscated from him.
Kaushal Pal Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro), said, “Three high-end stolen mobile phones, including two iPhones and a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, were recovered from his possession.”
During frisking and preliminary questioning, Gupta could not give a satisfactory response regarding the mobile phones that were found in his possession.
On investigating further into this matter, it was found that one of the confiscated mobiles was linked to a theft case that was already registered at the metro station police station on July 9.
Meanwhile, the other two phones that were seized by the police were found to be mentioned in a registered case that was reported on July 10, the DCP mentioned in his statement.
Subsequently, the police revealed that Gupta was wanted in a mobile theft case that was registered earlier this year in the month of March, where his associate Asif Pathan was arrested.
He was also wanted in two more mobile theft cases registered at the Azadpur Metro police station, the officer confirmed.
Gupta has a long criminal history and was previously involved in at least 30 criminal cases, including theft and violations under the Arms Act, registered across various police stations in Delhi, the official said.
