The Delhi Police on Thursday urged airlines to tighten internal security and monitor staff and ground-handling teams more closely to prevent baggage thefts at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
During a review meeting with air operators, Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGIA) Vichitra Veer emphasised the need for strict adherence to security guidelines issued by relevant agencies. The meeting saw participation from Chief Security Officers (CSOs) of over 40 airlines.
The meeting was also attended by Chief Security Officers (CSOs) of more than 40 airlines.
Addressing the issue of baggage theft and its prevention, the DCP assured the airlines that local police would provide all necessary support for effective security measures.
Notable baggage theft cases include the arrest of a loader in March for stealing 75 high-end smartphones, of which 36 were recovered by the police.
Similarly, in July, an Uzbek businesswoman was arrested for stealing three expensive handbags from a conveyor belt at Terminal-3 of IGIA.
According to police records, 42 individuals were arrested for baggage theft in 2023, and 150 missing or stolen items were returned to their owners, reflecting a 48% decline in such cases compared to 2022.
