West Bengal gets its first BJP government today, with Suvendu Adhikari sworn in as the new Chief Minister at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. The ceremony took place five days after the BJP scripted a historic win in the state, securing 207 seats and ending 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule under Mamata Banerjee.

The swearing-in was a major political event, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states, Union ministers, and senior party leaders attending it. Adhikari, who was elected leader of the BJP legislature party, has promised to run the new government through “collective leadership” and focus on corruption-free governance, justice, and public service.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the West Bengal government formation.

He added, "I congratulate Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. A people's government has been formed here, the BJP's double engine government will work for the people, for infrastructure development, for good governance."

Minu Sarkar, daughter-in-law of Makhanlal Sarkar, called it a historic day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi felicitated and embraced him during the swearing-in ceremony of the BJP government in West Bengal.

She said Makhanlal Sarkar had dedicated decades of his life to the party and made immense sacrifices. “No words can describe this moment. It is a day of immense joy for our family,” she said.

Makhanlal Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir in 1952 while accompanying Syama Prasad Mookerjee during the movement to hoist the Indian flag.

On the formation of the BJP government in Bengal, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta thanked the people of the state, especially women voters, for supporting the party in large numbers.

She said the mandate reflected the people’s desire for a better future and expressed confidence that the BJP would fulfil its vision of building a “Sonar Bangla” under the new government.

Manik Sarkar, the elder son of veteran BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar, expressed pride after PM Modi felicitated his father during the swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government in Bengal.

“It feels great. I am proud that my father has been honoured by the Prime Minister,” Manik Sarkar said, recalling his father’s long association with Syama Prasad Mookerjee and his dedication to the party. He said Makhanlal Sarkar was once arrested for singing the national anthem during a period when the RSS was banned. “Today, at 97, he continues to live a simple life,” he added.

Sheikh Hasina, President of the Bangladesh Awami League and former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, congratulates Suvendu Adhikari for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, paving the way for the BJP’s first-ever government in the state.

The wife of veteran BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar expressed happiness after Prime Minister Narendra Modi felicitated him and sought his blessings during the swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government in West Bengal.

She said Sarkar had been associated with the RSS since the age of 16 and remained deeply committed to its activities. “I am very happy that my husband has been honoured by the Prime Minister today. He has been with the RSS since he was 16 years old and is very particular about attending the shakha every day,” she said.


Suvendu Adhikari, in his first statement after taking oath as Bengal CM, asserted that his political party is based on the ideals of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and doesn’t need any certification. He added, "I am the Chief Minister now, and I belong to everybody. Those who are still discussing the results, may they be guided by wisdom…"

Suvendu highlighted that Bengal has been damaged a lot, saying education is lost, culture is destroyed, and we will rebuild Bengal. He said, "There is a huge responsibility on our shoulders; let them talk, I will only move ahead."

PM Modi also congratulated BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik after they took oath as ministers in the new West Bengal government.

In a post on X, Modi praised the leaders for their grassroots work and public service, saying they had “worked tirelessly” among the people.
