In a decisive push towards cleanliness, hygiene and environmental responsibility, Krishnagar Municipality, today, rolled out the ‘Clean KM Initiative’, a comprehensive waste-management drive that will see the installation of nearly 1,000 garbage bins for wet and dry waste across the town.
Under the initiative, colour-coded plastic bins will be placed at 100-metre intervals along lanes throughout the municipal area, ensuring easy access for residents and discouraging open dumping.
The programme was formally inaugurated by minister-in-charge Ujjal Biswas in the presence of District Magistrate Annesh Dasgupta, Superintendent of Police Amarnath K, and Krishnagar Municipality administrator Sharadwati Chowdhury, among others.
Speaking at the event, Mr Biswas reflected on the changing face of municipal services in Krishnagar. Recalling his younger days, he said household waste was once openly carried from residences to dumping grounds. “The system has transformed significantly, but cleanliness ultimately depends on public awareness and responsible disposal of waste,” he said, praising the municipality for taking a proactive step.
District Magistrate Mr Dasgupta described the initiative as a foundation-level intervention aimed at keeping the town clean. He said a total of 1,000 dual-coloured bins would be installed across Krishnagar and municipal workers would collect waste from these bins daily before transporting it to the central dumping ground at Godadanga. More plans were in the pipeline to further strengthen urban sanitation, he added.
Superintendent of Police Amarnath K stressed the role of citizen participation, urging residents to use the bins instead of dumping waste indiscriminately. He said cleanliness was closely linked to hygiene and public health and praised the municipality for involving residents in the initiative.
Municipal administrator Ms Chowdhury said local institutions and shop owners were encouraged to donate garbage bins, a call that received an encouraging response. Donors were felicitated with certificates at the programme. She noted that community involvement was key to sustaining cleanliness efforts.
Officials said the ‘Clean KM’ Initiative marked a significant step towards making Krishnagar a cleaner and more liveable town through shared civic responsibility.
