young immigrant from Chattagram in Bangladesh, currently residing in East Burdwan, was granted Indian citizenship by the Ministry of Home Affairs, according to the provisions of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, on Saturday.
Thirty-seven-year-old Sabuj Das, a resident of Kale Khan Talla locality in Purbasthali here for the last 26 years, had procured his EPIC and Aadhar Card, but was in trouble to establish his Indian roots, as his parents – Chandmoni Das and Chandratara Das – had illegally entered India 26 years ago.
Apprehensive about trouble during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, Sabuj had applied for Indian citizenship last October.
On Friday, he received a phone call from the ministry of home affairs that advised him to visit their Kolkata office to collect his nationality certificate. Sabuj said: “I was provided with the photocopy of the document. The hard copy will come to my address by post, the officials said.”
