A British-born Sikh woman was allegedly raped, beaten, and subjected to racist abuse in Oldbury, near Birmingham.
The West Midlands Police are treating the incident as a racially aggravated attack. The incident happened on Tuesday.
The victim reported that she was attacked by two white men.
West Midlands Police, in a statement on Friday, confirmed they are investigating the incident as a “racially aggravated attack” and appealed for public information.
The assault occurred on Tame Road in Oldbury, Sandwell, where the woman reported that she was “raped, beaten by two men”. She also informed Police that they hurled racist slurs at her.
According to the Sikh Federation (UK), during the attack the rapists shouted at her: “You don’t belong in this country, get out.”
Police said one suspect is described as white, of heavy build, with a shaved head, wearing a dark sweatshirt and gloves. The second was wearing a grey zipped top.
Authorities said they believe this to be an isolated incident and urged witnesses or anyone to come forward and share the information of the attackers.
Gurinder Singh Josan, the local MP for Smethwick, condemned the “truly horrific attack,” saying it had left the young woman deeply traumatised. He urged people to support police by sharing information in bringing the perpetrators of the “hate crime” to justice.
“I am reassured that Sandwell police are doing everything possible to track down those responsible. The incident is rightly being treated as a hate crime,” Josan said.
He added that officers are working closely and sensitively with the victim, given the trauma she has suffered.
