A tragic incident occurred in East Kolkata on Tuesday morning when a woman fell to her death from the 19-floor balcony of a high-rise residential complex.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Sanchita Agarwal (44), a resident of the upscale Urbana Complex in Anandapur. Around 5.30 a.m, security personnel discovered her lying unconscious and severely injured near Tower 4 of the complex. She was rushed to NRS Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Investigators said that the impact of the fall caused a fatal head injury, with her skull fractured, and deep wounds were also found on her right thigh.

Police recovered a small stool placed near the balcony railing, leading them to suspect that she had jumped deliberately. Her body was later identified by her two daughters, Suhana and Bhumi Agarwal. Family sources revealed that Sanchita was of a reserved nature and had been suffering from depression for the past several days. Officers said that preliminary findings indicate suicide, but they are not ruling out other possibilities at this stage. “We are examining whether there was any external pressure or other reasons behind the fall,” a police official said. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Police are also questioning the family and neighbours to piece together the circumstances leading to the incident. Meanwhile, the sudden death has cast a pall of gloom over the residential complex.
