Phulbani, 16 July
Police arrested Ms Nalini Sobhasunder, who was accused of abetting the alleged gang-rape of a woman of Kandhamal district, taking the total number of arrested persons in the heinous crime to three.
Ms Sobhasunder, incidentally, is a relative of the victim.
It was Ms Sobhasunder who had called her up the victim, undergoing training as a nun in a Chennai-based convent, to disseminate false information that her mother was ill. The 30-year old woman was forcibly confined at different places for a week and raped by three persons several times.
“We have arrested Ms Nalini Sobhasunder, aged around 30, on charges of conspiring the crime and abetting the criminals. She was nabbed from Mohona area of neighbouring Gajapati district,” said ASP, Kandhamal Mr GC Mallick.
Ms Sobhasunder was produced in the court of the JMFC, Daringibadi, which rejected her bail application and sent her to judicial custody.
Police had earlier arrested Mr Jatindra Sobhasunder (30) and Mr Jodindra Sobhasunder (28) in connection with the alleged gang rape. Police are searching for the third person who was involved in the ghastly crime.
It may be mentioned here that the trio, abetted by Ms Nalini Sobhasunder, had picked the victim up at Berhampur station after she reached the southern Odisha town on her way to her native village to see her ailing mother on 5 July. They took her to different places and raped her.
On 11 July, they dropped her at Berhampur station while issuing a threat to leave for Chennai without creating an uproar or face dire consequences.
The victim, however, preferred to reach her mother at Mingiapanga village under Brahmanigaon police station limits and lodged an FIR on 12 July.
Police suspect that family dispute may be the motive behind the crime.
