Responding to National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) direction, the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has asked the Visa Coke Limited (VCL) at Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur to pay Rs 82 lakh environmental compensation on the charge of perpetrating air and water pollution.
Acting on a complaint by a local outfit – Paribesh Suraksha Samiti – the NGT had earlier directed the SPCB to compute the environmental compensation on the ground that the industrial unit had violated the section 33 (A) of Water (pollution & control) Act, 1974 and under section 31 (A), Air (pollution and control) Act 1981.

The SPCB has now computed the environmental compensation of Rs 82,20,000 for the non-compliances to Consent conditions indicated in Board’s direction dated December 21, 2021.
“In view of above facts, you (Managing director, Visa Coke Limited) are now requested to submit objections, if any, on the above computation of environmental compensation, within seven days from date of issue of this letter, for examination by the Board. If any response is not received within the above period, it will be treated that the amount of environmental compensation computed by the Board is accepted by you and you are agreed to pay the same”, SPCB directed the Visa unit on 9 November.
