Bhubaneswar, 8 July
Odisha police today formed a anti-terror commando squad called Special Tactical Unit and manned it with personnel trained under the National Security Guard.
The squad of 28 commandos conducted a mock encounter here as part of the launch of the STU. Chief Secretary Mr Jugal Kishore Mahapatra , DGP Mr Prakash Mishra and senior police officers were present as the commandos demonstrated their skills in combating terrorists holed up in a building.
The STU will optimize the capability of the force to tackle terrorists said Mr Mahapatra while the DGP Mr Mishra informed that besides the 28 trained personnel another 30 were currently undergoing training at the NSG. They are a anti-terror unit meant to tackle urban terror strikes, hostage crisis etc, he said.
Unlike some of the other states, Odisha did not have a anti terror squad till date. With increasing instances of terror strike in different parts of the country, Odisha police thought it fit to form the STU.
In the maoist infested areas the Special Operations Group (SOG) has been operating as one such specialized unit.
