Six people were arrested in Hong Kong after a clash broke out on the streets of the city’s shopping district of Mong Kok as hundreds of protesters clashed with the police, according to officials on Monday.

After the first mass rally in the tourist hotspot of Kowloon against the government’s now-suspended extradition bill drew an estimated 230,000 peaceful protesters on Sunday afternoon, many remained behind to occupy the streets of Mong Kok and confront police late into the night, South China Morning Post reported.

Officers also warned the protesters that they were taking part in illegal assemblies.

Hong Kong police issued a statement that said, “They had arrested six people in connection with the march and the clash that followed”.

Four men and two women, aged between 20 and 66, were taken into custody, the statement added.

A government spokesman also slammed the clash on Sunday night.

The semi-autonomous city has been shaken by historic demonstrations in the past three weeks when protesters have demanded the withdrawal of a bill that would allow extraditions to the Chinese mainland.

Thousands of protesters paralysed central Hong Kong by blocking major roads in a defiant show of strength against government plans to allow extraditions to China early this month.

The protesters also demanded pro-Beijing Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s resignation.

Sunday’s march was the latest major protest calling for the full withdrawal of the legislation, which would have allowed the transfer of fugitives to mainland China and other jurisdictions with which the city had no extradition agreement, according to South China Morning Post.
