Sheikh Hasina to hold talks with Narendra Modi, NRC on agenda

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in New Delhi on Thursday on a four-day visit to India during which she is expected to discuss various bilateral issues, including Dhaka’s concerns over the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

“A relationship of utmost priority. Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina arrives in Delhi on an official visit. India and Bangladesh share multifaceted relations which go far beyond the strategic partnership,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

This is her first visit to India after assuming office for a third consecutive term.

During the visit, Sheikh Hasina will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday and call on President Ram Nath Kovind. The two PMs will jointly inaugurate 3 bilateral projects via video link.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Congress president Sonia Gandhi will call on Sheikh Hasina.

It is learnt that the two countries would sign more than 10 MoUs during the visit.

The two sides are also expected to discuss issues, including Teesta water-sharing and the repatriation of Rohingyas. The two countries will also discuss ways to enhance connectivity between them through river and sea routes.

The two PMs are also likely to discuss the joint celebration of birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence.
