In a move to ensure timely justice, Bangladesh’s Law Adviser Asif Nazrul announced on Monday that the death case of Sharif Osman Hadi will be tried under the Speedy Trial Tribunal.

Nazrul communicated through a Facebook post that the proceedings will be conducted under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002. He added that the trial must be completed within 90 days of the police submitting their investigation report, under Section 10 of the law.

Main accused yet to be arrested

Authorities have made progress in the investigation in the case, confirmed the Home Adviser Lt Gen (retired) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. Efforts are on to arrest the prime accused, Faisal Karim Masud. He stressed that the case is being treated as a top priority and assured that all those involved in the killing would be brought to justice.

On questions relating to the whereabouts of the primary shooter, Jahangir Alam said, “If we knew where he was, he would have already been arrested.” However, considering the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation, Alam refused to share any further details.

Probe still underway

So far, ten accused have been arrested in the case. After holding a meeting on the law and order situation at the Secretariat, the home adviser said that the arrests were made during a joint operation conducted by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police. The prime suspect’s wife, his parents, his brother-in-law, and the owner of the motorcycle allegedly used during the murder are among those arrested.

Brutal attack on Hadi in Dhaka

Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, was shot at on 12 December in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area. He was airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical treatment on 15 December, but succumbed to his injuries on 18 December.

Hadi was a popular leader of the July uprising that played a significant role in bringing about the fall of ex-PM Sheikh Hasina’s government. He was also being considered as a potential candidate from Dhaka-8 in the February 2026 national elections.

His death led to widespread protests across Dhaka. Demonstrations are being held across Bangladesh demanding justice for Hadi. Inqilab Moncho, a prominent platform that emerged during the July uprising, warned of holding a mass movement against the interim government if justice is not delivered.
