Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine in overnight strikes as peace talks hit a deadlock after Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected western security for Kyiv.
Ukraine’s Air Force said that Russia launched 805 drones and 13 missiles in its largest such attack in the war. Over 750 of the drones were shot down.
However, Russian drones and missile managed to go past the Ukraine air defences and hit a government building in Kyiv.
This was also the first time Russia targeted a main government building.
The attack comes after President Putin rejected western proposal for deployment of “reassurance force” after the ceasefire in Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron had announced that 26 of Ukraine’s western allies have agreed to deploy force by land, sea and air the moment fighting stops.
Putin said that the troops will be a legitimate target if deployed.
The talks of a ceasefire held first between US President Donald Trump and Putin in Alaska and then in the White House among Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders.
However, they met with headwinds as both Putin and Zelenskyy put forth demands that were not acceptable to each other.
While Putin wanted Ukraine to cede territories in Russian control, Zelenskyy wanted a security guarantee after Trumo ruled out his NATO ambitions.
