Balasore, 29 December
Vehicular movement to several localities including the defence establishments at Chandpur, the beach and Balaramgadi fishing base was thrown out of gear as a section of aggrieved citizens staged a road blockade to protest the poor condition of the road connecting Station Square and Patrapada.
Agitating under the banner of “Suraksha Manch”, the locals demanded immediate repairing of the patch, while alleging that several accidents have taken place due to the unmotorable condition of the road in recent times.
According to sources, the stir, which continued between 5AM and 1PM, not only affected the daily commuters, beach goers and fishermen but also the deference establishments as no vehicles could reach them.
“The defence establishments including Interim Test Range (ITR), Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE) and Estate Mechanical Engineering (EME) station workshop were affected as the staff could not reach them for duties,” said a source.
The senior defence officials including directors of ITR and PXE held talks with the agitators and assured that the repair and renovation works would begin from April next year. The district administration later stepped in following which the stir was called off at about 1PM.
The ADM Mr Akshay Mohanty, Sadar tehsildar Mr Pinaki Pattnaik, Town police station IIC Mr Manas Deo, among others, persuaded the agitators to withdraw the picketing.
“The defence authorities have assured us to begin the repair work by April next year. The picketing was over by 1 PM. There would be a meeting with representatives of the agitators and representatives of defence establishments and the issue would be discussed,” said tehsildar Mr Pattnaik.
