Tensions soared between the United States and Russia after President Donald Trump ordered deployment of two nuclear submarines to undisclosed locations “closer to Russia”, in response to an alleged threat made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
What began as peace talks in Ukraine, now appears to have escalated into a dangerous standoff between the two most powerful nuclear-armed nations with Trump moving away from mere rehotorics to overt military posturing.
In a scoial media post on his Truth Social, Trumo announced,” I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”
“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances,” the US President added.
He was referring to Medvedev’s remarks in response to Trump’s “dead economies” jibe at Russia and India.
Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, made a reference to the Soviet-era automatic nuclear retaliation system “Dead Hand”.
“And about India’s and Russia’s ‘dead economies’ and ‘entering very dangerous territory’ – well, let him remember his favorite movies about ‘the walking dead,’ as well as how dangerous the fabled ‘Dead Hand’ can be,” Medvedev said.
When Trump was asked about the deployment of nuclear submarines, he explained, ““Well, we had to do that. We just have to be careful. A threat was made, and we didn’t think it was appropriate.
He further added, “So I do that on the basis of safety for our people. A threat was made by a former president of Russia, and we’re going to protect our people.”
