Well-known voluntary organisation working for environment protection, Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS) organised a slew of programmes to mark the National Bird Day at Satkosia gorge sanctuary even as a large number of activists, elected representatives, ecologists and students participated in large numbers.
The outfit organised its programmes in Madhupur and Chhotakei where a large number of bird species live.
Basic knowledge about birds, their identification methodology, techniques of bird census, their behavioural studies and different methods of bird conservation figured prominently during the deliberations.
Inaugurating the occasion, the district honorary wildlife warden, Mr Prasanna Kumar Behera stressed on the need for conservation of birds and exhorted one and all to put their best efforts in protecting the species and their habitations.
Social activist Mr Pradip Kumar Sahu and zilla parishad member Mr Naba Kishore Bisoi spoke on the role of birds in human life.
“The Birds are useful in human life as they are the destroyer of pests, insects, rodents and other harmful creatures. Birds like vultures are the natural scavengers removing dead animals which may spread diseases. Besides, they are used as food like poultry. Besides, birds are a great source for fun, make this world more colorful and beautiful. Birds are playing vital role for balance of our ecosystem and their conservation is highly needed was discussed in both training and meeting,” said Mr Sahu.
A number of members of Van Suraksha Samitis of Satkosia, serving and retired forest officers and other staff members, students from Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), attended the programmes.
