Iran-aligned militia group Islamic Resistance in Iraq carried out a series of coordinated attacks targeting United States military bases in Iraq and the wider West Asia region. Claiming responsibility, the group said it carried out 19 operations in 24 hours, using a combination of drones and missiles.
In a statement released on Saturday, the umbrella organisation of Iran-backed factions said the strikes were launched early in the day and involved “dozens of drones and rockets.” However, it did not provide details on specific locations targeted or the extent of damage caused.
The attacks come as regional tensions continue to escalate, with the ongoing US-Israel conflict involving Iran entering its 36th day. Iran-backed militias have repeatedly targeted US military positions in Iraq and neighbouring areas in recent weeks.
Separately, local Iraqi sources reported fresh violence involving Iran-linked groups. According to an Iraqi police official cited by media reports, an attack targeted the headquarters of the Iran-backed Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) in al-Qaim in western Iraq. Another airstrike was reported on the PMF’s 34th Brigade base in Mosul. There has been no official confirmation on casualties or damage.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, along with the PMF, comprises Shia armed factions that have played roles in multiple regional conflicts, often acting as proxies in broader geopolitical confrontations.
Baghdad US Embassy’s security alert
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Baghdad has issued a heightened security alert, warning of potential attacks by Iran-aligned militia groups in the Iraqi capital. The advisory cautioned that such groups could carry out strikes in central Baghdad within a short timeframe, raising concerns over the safety of US citizens and assets in Iraq.
The embassy said the US nationals, businesses, universities, diplomatic facilities, energy infrastructure, hotels, airports, and other locations linked to the United States could be potential targets. It also flagged the risk of kidnappings, noting that militia groups have previously targeted Americans.
