Bernie Sanders, the Democrat presidential candidate has said that he was “deeply concerned” about the situation in Kashmir terming it “unacceptable” and asked the US government to “speak out boldly” in support of a UN-backed peaceful resolution to resolve the issue.

Bernie Sanders, who is the senator from Vermont, was addressing the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America on Saturday when he made these observations. He added that the US government must ensure the implementation of international laws and should press for a peaceful resolution through the UN, a media report said.

“India’s action is unacceptable,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had emphatically rejected any scope for third party mediation on Kashmir saying that it was a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. His position was backed by US President Donald Trump who had recently offered to mediate on the Kashmir issue. The two leaders had discussed Jammu and Kashmir on the sidelines of the G7 summit at Biarritz in France.

The United States had, on Thursday, said that it is closely watching the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and that India and Pakistan should resolve their issues in a peaceful manner.

“The US is watching the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and continues to be ‘very concerned’ by reports of detentions and the continued restrictions on the residents of the region,” a US State Department spokesperson had said on Thursday, adding, “We urge respect for human rights, compliance with legal procedures, and an inclusive dialogue with those affected.”

Tensions have escalated between India and Pakistan ever since the revocation of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
