Indian-flagged vessel MSV Virat 1 suffers engine failure off the coast of Oman, 14 crew members rescued

MSV Virat 1, an Indian-flagged mechanised sailing vessel carrying 14 Indian crew members, was involved in an incident off the coast of Oman. The Embassy of India in Oman on Sunday, June 14, said that the search and rescue operations was carried out in coordination with Omani authorities.

In a post on X, the Embassy stated that the vessel was carrying 14 Indian crew members at the time of the incident.

“The Mission has learnt of an incident involving an Indian Flagged Mechanised Sailing Vessel Virat 1, off the coast of Oman, reportedly embarked with 14 Indian crew. Search and Rescue is being coordinated with the Omani authorities and vessels in vicinity of the incident,” it said.

Providing an update on the incident, the Indian Embassy in Oman, in another post, informed that the vessel experienced an engine failure.

“It has emerged that the vessel experienced an engine failure, and the crew eventually transferred safely to a liferaft. Rescue operation is presently underway through ships in vicinity, under coordination of Omani authorities,” it noted.

The Oman coast has witnessed tensions in recent days as three vessels with Indian crew members came under US attack in the region. One of the incidents killed three seafarers.
