US President Donald Trump used his 2026 State of the Union address to project strength at home and abroad, issuing a fresh warning to Iran, defending his sweeping tariff regime, and repeating his claim that he prevented a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan.
With the official theme ‘America at 250: Strong, Prosperous and Respected’, Trump framed his speech as proof of what he described as a dramatic turnaround in his first year back in office, from border security and inflation to global conflicts and trade. The address comes as the United States marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Highlights From Trump’s 2026 State of the Union Speech
On Iran and nuclear weapons:
Trump accused Iran of again pursuing its “sinister ambitions,” alleging it is advancing nuclear and missile capabilities. “My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy. But one thing is certain, I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror… to have a nuclear weapon. Can’t happen,” he said.
He added that Tehran wants “to make a deal, but we haven’t heard those secret words. We will never build a nuclear weapon.”
Missile threat claim:
The President warned that Iran has developed missiles capable of threatening Europe and US bases overseas, and is working on systems that could “soon reach the United States of America”.
US strikes on Iranian facilities:
Referring to tensions last year, Trump recalled the US hitting three Iranian nuclear facilities in June, claiming the operation resulted in “total obliteration” of Iran’s nuclear programme.
Iran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons, saying its programme is for peaceful energy purposes.
India–Pakistan claim:
Trump reiterated that he had ended eight wars in his first 10 months in office and claimed that India and Pakistan “would have had a nuclear war.”
He said Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told him that “almost 35 million people would have died” had he not intervened.
India has denied any US involvement in the decision to cease hostilities following Operation Sindoor, stating that the request came from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations.
Russia–Ukraine war:
Trump said his administration was “working hard” to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, adding that it was “a war which would have never happened if I were President.”
Border and immigration:
Claiming a sharp decline in illegal crossings, Trump said that in the past nine months “zero illegal aliens have been admitted to the United States.”
He also said the flow of fentanyl across the border was down by 56 per cent in a year and that the murder rate had seen its “single largest decline in recorded history.”
Inflation and fuel prices:
Trump said core inflation had fallen to 1.7 per cent in the last three months of 2025, its lowest level in over five years.
He claimed gasoline prices, which had crossed $6 per gallon in some states earlier, were now below $2.30 in most states and even $1.85 in Iowa during a recent visit.
Tariffs and Supreme Court ruling:
Defending his tariff strategy as central to a “stunning economic turnaround,” Trump criticised a recent Supreme Court ruling that struck down several tariff actions, calling it “very unfortunate.”
He claimed markets had hit historic highs under his tariff structures, citing the Dow crossing 50,000 and the S&P touching 7,000.
‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’:
Praising congressional Republicans, Trump said the legislation delivered “no tax on tips, no tax on overtime and no tax on social security for our great seniors.”
He criticised Democrats for opposing the tax package.
AI data centres and electricity pledge:
Trump announced what he called a “rate payer protection pledge”, requiring major technology firms building AI data centres to generate their own electricity rather than strain local grids.
“We’re telling the major tech companies that they have the obligation to provide for their own power needs so that no one’s prices will go up,” he said, adding that companies could build their own power plants.
‘Delilah Law’ and voting changes:
Trump called on Congress to pass what he described as the “Delilah Law,” barring states from granting commercial driver’s licences to illegal immigrants. He also pushed for mandatory voter ID and proof of citizenship, urging lawmakers to pass the “Save America Act” to prevent undocumented migrants and other “unpermitted persons” from voting.
Retirement plan pledge:
Trump announced that all working Americans would have access to a retirement plan with government matching of up to USD 1,000 annually.
Energy production claims:
Trump said American natural gas production is at an all-time high because he kept his promise to “drill, baby, drill.” He claimed oil output has risen by over 600,000 barrels per day.
Investment commitments:
Trump said his administration secured more than USD 18 trillion in commitments in one year, compared to less than $1 trillion over four years under the previous administration.
‘Dead country’ to ‘hottest country’:
“A short time ago we were a dead country. Now we are the hottest country anywhere in the world,” Trump said, calling the present moment the “golden age of America.”
America at 250:
Trump described 2026, marking 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, as a moment of renewal, saying, “America is respected again, perhaps like never before.”
