JAJPUR, 16 July
Two months after the media had reported the arrest of an innocent man in connection with a chit fund scam, the district police shunted out the Dharmasala police station inspector in charge Mr Prasanta Kumar Majhi to Korei.
It was alleged that police had arrested Mohammad Ali on 10 May instead of the chit fund operator who had escaped.
Ali was sent to jail despite protests by his family who insisted that the police had picked up the wrong man. The falsely implicated Ali was working in a security agency in Hyderabad and was in no way connected with the chit fund company.
Jajpur SP Deepak Kumar had ordered an inquiry into the incident by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
The DSP Bipin Behari Mallick in his inquiry report submitted to the SP had corroborated the facts published in newspapers. In his report, the DSP had held both the inspector in-charge and investigation officer of the police station responsible for the incident.
Basing on the inquiry report the SP started disciplinary proceeding against the officers and sought explanation from both of them. Yesterday the SP transferred Majhi to Korei.
Earlier, he had been placed under suspension in 2011.
But he had managed to remain in Dharmasala police station.
