The year 2026 has already registered one of the most dramatic geopolitical episodes: a high-intensity overnight military operation led by the United States to capture the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife from Caracas.

With dramatic visuals, bold statements, and tall claims, the Venezuelan episode was nothing less than a political thriller. But there is a need to look beyond the spectacle. It is a strategic mission propelled by the goal of resource grab.

On the surface, the US may be framing its interventions around combating drug trafficking, saving Venezuela from collapse, restoring democracy, or countering foreign influence. But at its core, the Venezuela crisis is about control over one of the largest oil reserves on the planet.

Oil has always been at the core of the global economy and geopolitics, and Venezuela’s oil wealth makes it a prime pick for the major powers.

Venezuela: The ‘OIL POWERHOUSE’

Venezuela holds an estimated 303 billion barrels of proven crude oil reserves, making it the country with the largest oil reserves in the world. Its oil riches surpass even energy giants like Saudi Arabia, which hosts around 267 billion barrels of crude oil.

According to data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), Venezuela’s crude reserves account for nearly one-fifth of the world’s proven oil supply. The OPEC data suggests that Venezuela controls around 17% of the total oil reserves worldwide. Venezuela’s oil reserves are six times more than those of the United States.

Despite years of economic crisis, the scale and scope of this country’s energy potential remain unrivalled.

Much of the country’s oil wealth is present in the Orinoco Oil Belt spanning across 21,000 square miles across Venezuela’s northeastern territory.

Most importantly, Venezuela’s heavy crude oil is well-suited for U.S. refineries, particularly those along the Gulf Coast.

Also, the country has some of the most significant natural gas resources in the Western Hemisphere. As of 2023, Venezuela hosted approximately 73 per cent of South America’s total natural gas reserves, amounting 195 trillion cubic feet (Tcf).

Apart from its vast oil and natural gas opulence, Venezuela holds significant coal reserves. As of 2021, Venezuela had nearly 806 million short tons of coal, making it the fourth-largest coal reserve in South America.

Trump took his time to hit the bull’s eye!

Venezuela, with the world’s largest proven oil reserves, has always been on the United States’ wishlist. Neither economic collapse nor political instability ever lowered the strategic value of Venezuela for the US. The country has long been an energy superpower in waiting, a fact that has never escaped the attention of Washington or Trump.

Under the pretext of saving America and Americans from Maduro’s drug trafficking regime, Trump fulfilled the long-standing interest through a premeditated pressure campaign.

What the world witnessed and what Venezuela experienced in the last few months was the finale of a carefully orchestrated escalation.

A gradual escalation in tensions between the two countries

The United States gave momentum to its maritime pressure campaign in December 2025 with the seizure of oil tankers off the coast of Venezuela. The act directly impacted Venezuela’s oil exports. Simultaneously, US forces conducted a ‘counter-narcotics campaign’ in international waters, destroying over 30 boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean.

  • December 31, 2025: The US conducted a covert drone strike on a Venezuelan port facility along the country’s coastline. This marked the first direct American attack on a target inside Venezuelan territory.
  • January 1, 2026: The US Treasury Department imposed new sanctions on Venezuela’s oil industry, targeting four companies operating in the sector and blocking four oil tankers as US-controlled property. It further restricted Venezuela from selling oil in global markets.
  • January 3, 2026: Just two days later, on 03 January, the US military launched a targeted operation on Venezuela, codenamed Operation Absolute Resolve.

Following the operation, President Trump said, “Nicolás Maduro and his wife captured, flown out of the country.” Trump declared the success of the military operation, projecting pride and confidence and showing no remorse after strikes on the Venezuelan capital.

The timeline reveals how the United States executed a calculated campaign using narco-terrorism as justification, and concluded with the military operation as the final move. Checkmate!

Clearly, all the staged turmoil is about the bigger game involving oil and global power dynamics.
