Congress activists laid siege to the SP&’s office here for two hours protesting against the arrest of 15 party workers including the district Congress president Pratap Pradhan on Tuesday in connection with violent incidents during the bandh.
The DCC chief Pratap Pradhan and others were charged under various non-bailable sections including 307 IPC. They were sent to jail as their bail plea was rejected by court.
Hundreds of congress workers to day took out a rally in the city and converged in front of the office of police superintendent. They pelted eggs at the police that was deployed in front of the office.
OPCC president Prasad Harichandan and state woman Congress president Sasmita Behera among the top leaders attended the protest meeting.
District SP Kabita Jalan was not in office during the protest. Addressing the gathering Prasad Harichandan demanded withdrawal of the “ false cases” against the 15 Congress activists.
Harichandan alleged that the police had been converted to BJD cadres and was unleashing terror on opposition activists across the state.
“When ruling BJD leaders protest and indulge in hooliganism like assaulting activists of other parties including a union minister, the police looks the other way. No arrest is conducted, let alone slapping sections like attempt to murder”, alleged Harichandan.
No action is taken on the police which killed five innocent villagers including a 13 month child in Kandhamal district, he remarked.
Sasmita Behera while speaking to gathering also condemned the police action demanded immediate review of the false cases against Congressmen.
Harichandan and others also went to the prison to meet Pradhan and other arrested party workers.
