Hundreds of school children of Bhagabati high school under Barachana police station limits in Jajpur district took out a candle light procession yesterday to protest against the alleged murder of a student, Mamata Nayak recently.
The procession started from Kachilagadia, the village of the deceased and passed through all the villages and hamlets of Siha panchayat before culminating near the high school. Social activists and students held a meeting and raised slogans against the local police condemning its inaction and inability to arrest the culprit.
14 year-old Mamata, a class VIII student of Bhagabati high school was found dead just few yards away from her house on 26 November. The incident occurred when her parents were not at home. The girl was in her house with her old grand mother. Her body was allegedly cremated in absence of her parents and without informing local police. A public outcry was erupted following the death of the girl and hurried cremation of her body in absence of her parents.
An FIR was filed with Barachana police by a local youth even after public outcry. Police investigation into the incident is on.
