At least 22 workers were killed and many injured when a fire broke out at a small gas lighter factory in Binjai city of Indonesia’s North Sumatra province on Saturday.

The fire that gutted the factory located in Binjai’s village of Sambirejo erupted around 11.30 am.

Binjai Disaster Mitigation office personnel said, “The fire occurred in the warehouse section, killing 22 ones. Three survivors were evacuated from the scene by rescuers.”

He further said that residents and firefighters managed to extinguish the fire two hours later.

Most of the workers were in a room at the time when the fire broke out in the factory.

One of the witnesses said, “An explosion was heard prior to the fire”.

Bodies of those killed in the fire were taken to the police hospital of Bhayangkara in Bijnai.

An investigation is being carried out by the police to find the exact cause of the fire.
