One person was killed and at least 25 others sustained grievous injuries when the bus they were travelling in came in contact with an 11 KV power line in Kalahandi district today.
The incident took place near Chanchn Baheli village at about 10.30am. The ill-fated bus belongs to Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC).According to reports, the bus was on its way from Kesinga in Kalahandi district to Umerkote in Nawarangpur when the mishap took place. It is suspected that the overhead luggage, supposedly a bicycle, touched the lowly-hanging high voltage line leading to the mishap.
“A couple of cycles, among other things, were loaded atop the bus and we suspect that one of them came in contact with the line, charging the bus,” said a senior police official.
The deceased has been identified as Nira Gopal (30) of Behera village.
Eyewitnesses informed that many passengers, including jumped out of the bus and escaped unhurt while at least 25 others got trapped in the electrified bus.
“Of the 25 injured, nine have been hospitalized in the sub-divisional hospital at Dharamgarh. Six have been referred to the district hospital at Bhawanipatna and condition of two of them is critical,” said a source.
