Himalayas: Adventure for challenged kids

The Himalayan Nature and Adventure Foundation attempts to bring not only the general youth but also the differently-abled ones in close commune with nature.

Himalayas: Adventure for challenged kids

Here’s some good news for those from the younger generation with a bent for adventure. If the adventure bug in you does not let you sleep, then join the 28th Nature Study-cum- Adventure Camp for the challenged kids and youth 2018 hosted by Siliguri’s Himalayan Nature and Adventure Foundation. The annual nature study camp for kids from five to 25 years is slated to be on from 25 to 30 December.

In an attempt to bring both the challenged kids and the youth in close commune with nature, the foundation is hosting the camp that would provide an opportunity to the challenged kids to have an encounter with nature. The camp will be held at Rungjhung Khola and the site is Patharjhora Tea Estate in the district of Jalpaiguri at a distance of 55 km from Siliguri. The camp site boasts of lush greenery.

Shankar Mazumdar, secretary of the foundation, said, “Around 110 challenged kids from all over the country will be present including mentally retarded, visually and physically impaired and those suffering from cerebral palsy. There will be students from the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy, Kolkata, Korok Home of Jalpaiguri, Matru Chhaya of Siliguri, Sishu Sarathi of Guwahati, Sikkim Viklang Sansthan and School of Joy of Jamshedpur. The camp is free of cost for the challenged kids. Nearly 160 school students will make their presence in the nature study camp. We intend to make the challenged kids at par with the general category of students. We would like to make the challenged kids perform.”

The course fee for general category of students is tagged at Rs 3,000. Mazumdar said, “This camp will provide a platform for students to embark upon adventure and it will serve as a break from the routine life. The nature study camp will have courses on hiking, jungle trekking and camp craft for students.”

Besides, the environmental group is into organising anti-cracker rally in presence of 50 school students from Siliguri. The rally will take off from Bagha Jatin Park and terminate at Kanchenjunga Stadium. Mazumdar further said, “We are striving for noise-free and pollution-free Diwali. The quantum of smoke emitted from bursting of colourful crackers is highly hazardous for human beings and often it poses difficulty in breathing for those suffering from asthma.”

The environmental group wants to do something more for the younger generation. There is the “Clean and Green Singalila” – a clean drive mission of the Sandakphu region starting 6 November and the five-day event will kick-start from Siliguri.

There will be two teams pass through Maneybhanjan and move to Chitrey. From there, they will trek to Tumbing, Jobari and reach Gouribas. Mazumdar added, “This forms a part of our annual trekking and cleaning mission of Sandakphu since the trekking trail is polluted by hikers every year.”
