WhatsApp for Android and iOS gets ‘Live Location’ sharing feature

WhatsApp is taking things a little further for location sharing. It is now getting a new live location sharing feature for both Android and iOS apps.

Starting Wednesday, WhatsApp for Android and iOS will start receiving this new real-time location feature in which all WhatsApp users will be able to share their real-time location with other friends for 15 minutes, 1 hour or up to 8 hours.

Speaking to Gadgets 360 while giving a demo of the live location sharing feature, Zafir Khan, Product Manager said, “Live location is a way to share your location in a chat and the participants in that chat will then be able to see your real-time location as it updates on a map. [It’s] short-term in nature, it’s limited in duration.”

Live-location sharing means that the other person can keep a track of your movement in real-time, which means if you are going towards any direction then the other person can even guide you the way to a certain place with just simple directions.

Google Maps has this feature already, but not many know about it. In that, it allows you to share your live location to anyone through any messaging or email app on your phone. For example- you can either share location directly from Google Maps to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Gmail or even text etc.

WhatsApp’s rival messaging platform Telegram also allows you to share your location with others on the app.
