Google brings .app — domain secured with built-in HTTPS

Google has rolled out “.app” — a top-level domain (TLD) that can be booked from Google Registry. A TLD is the last part of a domain name, like .com in “www.thestatesman.com” or .google in “blog.google” or “.org” and “.in”.

“With a memorable .app domain name, it’s easy for people to find and learn more about your app,” Google has said in a blog post.

“We created the .app TLD specifically for apps and app developers, with added security to help you showcase your apps to the world,” says the post.

Till May 7, developers can register .app domains as part of Google’s Early Access Program. For an additional fee, they can secure desired domains ahead of general availability, according to the Google post.

From May 8, .app domains will be available to the public through any registrar.

A key benefit of the .app domain is that security is built in, says Google.

“The big difference is that HTTPS is required to connect to all .app websites, helping protect against ad malware and tracking injection by ISPs, in addition to safeguarding against spying on open WiFi networks,” says the post.

According to Google, .app will be the first TLD with enforced security made available for general registration, and it will help move the web to an HTTPS-everywhere future in a big way.

Developers looking to booking a domain can visit get.app to see who’s already there, and choose a registrar partner to start the procedure.

“You can use your new domain as a landing page to share trustworthy download links, keep users up to date, and deep link to in-app content,” the Google post tells app developers.
