Kerala is set to have its own indigenously developed laptop, named ‘Coconics’, soon. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan released the logo of Coconics  on Wednesday. The project will be implemented in public, private partnership mode.

A joint venture of state-run the Keltron and UST Global, the laptop manufacturing unit is functioning on the Keltron campus at Manvila Industrial Estate in Thiruvananthapuram. The KSIDC and Acceleron Labs are also associating with the project.

At the launch, Industries Minister E P Jayarajan unveiled a laptop manufactured by Coconics at the function. The CM said Coconics planned to develop a electronic hardware manufacturing ecosystem.

Talking about the project, the CM also said this was a “crucial step in the State’s pivoting to high-tech manufacturing”.

“Coconics, Kerala’s own laptop brand, will be launched soon. Public-private venture will involve the State-run Keltron, UST global, KSIDC & Axeleron. Company will operate out of the Keltron Centre in TVM. This is a crucial step in the State’s pivoting to high-tech manufacturing,” Vijayan tweeted.

The name, Coconics, is a mix of two words ‘Coco’ (from coconut) and ‘electronics’.

According to reports, the laptop manufacturing unit at Manvila has a capacity to manufacture 2.5 lakh pieces a year, catering to government offices, educational institutions and commercial establishments.
