As the attack moved to London Bridge, a throng of people could be seen in videos grappling with Khan on a pedestrian walkway.
According to the statement, "the person who carried out the London attack... was a fighter from the Islamic State, and did so in response to calls to target citizens of coalition countries".
The attack came a few hours before a number of people were wounded in a stabbing in one of the main shopping streets in the centre of the Dutch city of The Hague.
