In his speech to the students and teachers at Surat, Gandhi said, ‘the men and women who died in Jalianwalla Bagh were not martyrs and heroes‘. Finally, for General Dyer, the only punishment he recommended was stopping of his pension. Such love for the adversary, we were told, was the essence of Satyagraha.

Gandhi’s Path

Gandhi‘s death snapped the dialectic link between politics and his Constructive Programme. While contemporary India is vastly different from Gandhi‘s times, many of his fundamental concerns are alive. Today‘s India is more prosperous, but also vastly more unequal.

Would the Mahatma have approved?

The National Register of Citizens encourages disrespect towards others as a naturally driven response for self-preservation, which in a Gandhian way, undermines the essential humanity of those considered 'illegal immigrants'.
