Basusree cinema hall in south Kolkata has long been a venue of activities which were away from the realm of the silver screen. Be it an adda of footballers and film stars where the redoubtable Mantu Bose held court or the soiree in which Uttam Kumar participated, the crowds outside the cinema hall were always gawking.

But the occasion was far more serious when Ramon Magsaysay Award winner journalist Raveesh Kumar delivered the Rituparno Ghosh memorial lecture last week. Organised by Prottoy Gender Trust this is the fourth occasion the lecture is being delivered in the memory of a remarkable man whose passing has left the world of Indian films poorer.
