Yo-Yo test clouds Rohit Sharma’s England tour, Ajinkya Rahane put on standby

‘Mr Dependable’ Ajinkya Rahane has been put on standby for Indian cricket team’s upcoming tour to England by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as ‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma prepares for the Yo-Yo fitness test after failing in the first attempt.

“There is nothing new in having a standby. In case the necessity arises, Rahane is being seen as a reserve opener and will fill in that role. As of now, we have not heard that Rohit has any fitness issues,” a senior BCCI official was quoted saying to PTI.

Indian players took the test on 15 June and cleared. Ambati Rayudu was the only player who failed the test and was replaced by Suresh Raina.

As per reports in media, India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma had skipped the test on June 15th due to his prior commitments and had appeared for the same on Sunday (June 17). However, it has been learnt that Rohit Sharma failed the fitness test and was asked to take the test again on Tuesday. But he ‘reportedly’ did not appear for the test on Tuesday.

Reports say he will undertake the test Wednesday.

Yo-Yo Test is a mandatory fitness for selection in the national team. To make it to the national squad, a player must score a minimum of 16.1 in the test.

“Going forward, players will be picked after they pass the fitness test. The players gave the fitness test after being picked for the UK tour because of the IPL. It puts the players in an awkward situation and it will not be repeated,” a BCCI official had told news agency PTI.
