India face their toughest challenge of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup so far when they take on six-time champions Australia in a must-win Group A clash at Lord’s on Sunday, with a place in the semifinals hanging in the balance.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s side head into the final group match with six points from four games, but qualification is no longer entirely in their hands. Earlier in the day, South Africa will face Bangladesh, and if the Proteas win as expected, India will have no option but to beat unbeaten Australia to book a place in the last four.
Australia have already secured a semifinal berth with four wins from four matches and can even afford a defeat, thanks to their superior net run rate. India, however, are likely to be eliminated if they lose, unless Bangladesh pull off a major upset against South Africa.
The high-stakes clash comes at a time when India are still searching for consistency despite winning three of their four matches.
While the opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma have found form after a slow start to the tournament, the middle order has yet to make a significant impact. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues have shown glimpses but have struggled to convert starts into match-winning innings.
Fielding remains India’s biggest concern in the tournament. The team has dropped six catches in the last two matches, including four against Bangladesh. Those lapses proved costly against South Africa, where India suffered their only defeat of the tournament, and similar mistakes against an Australian side known for capitalising on every opportunity could prove decisive.
India will also hope for another strong showing from left-arm spinner Shree Charani, who has been one of the standout performers of the tournament with 12 wickets in four matches. However, the team management will want greater support from the rest of the bowling attack, which has struggled to click consistently as a unit.
Despite the concerns, India can take confidence from their recent record against Australia. Harmanpreet’s side defeated the Australians in last year’s Women’s ODI World Cup semifinal before going on to win their maiden ICC title, and earlier this year they also claimed a historic 2-1 T20I series victory in Australia.
Australia, meanwhile, head into the contest unbeaten and are expected to be strengthened by the return of star batter Phoebe Litchfield, who has recovered from a calf injury after missing the last three matches. Her return adds further depth to an already formidable batting line-up as the six-time champions look to carry their unbeaten run into the knockout stage.
