Naomi Osaka delivered the biggest upset of Wimbledon 2026 on Sunday, stunning world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6(2) to reach the quarter-finals at the All England Club for the first time in her career.

The four-time Grand Slam champion produced a fearless display on Centre Court, needing just one hour and 28 minutes to end Sabalenka’s recent dominance in their rivalry. Osaka had lost all three of their meetings this season and had not beaten the Belarusian since the 2018 US Open.

The victory marks another major step in Osaka’s resurgence after returning to the top level of the sport. Having already reached the second week at all four Grand Slams this season, the former world No. 1 has now added a maiden Wimbledon quarter-final to her growing list of comeback milestones.

Osaka dictated proceedings from the outset, striking the ball cleanly from the baseline and refusing to allow Sabalenka to settle into her rhythm. She raced through the opening set 6-2 with a series of aggressive winners before facing a sterner challenge in the second.

Sabalenka raised her level and forced the set into a tie-break, but Osaka remained composed under pressure. The Japanese star dominated the breaker 7-2 to seal one of the biggest victories of her comeback.

The defeat ended a remarkable run for Sabalenka, whose streak of 14 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final appearances, dating back to the 2022 US Open, came to an end. It also marked the Belarusian’s first straight-sets defeat at a major since the 2020 US Open.

For Osaka, the win is another reminder of her ability to perform on the sport’s biggest stages. With her confidence growing and a place in the last eight secured for the first time at Wimbledon, the former champion has firmly established herself as one of the leading contenders for the title.

As the tournament heads into its closing stages, Osaka’s victory also guarantees that the women’s singles draw will crown a first-time Wimbledon champion.
