Will this be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last home appearance? Portugal coach responds

As speculation grows over whether Portugal’s friendly against Nigeria could mark Cristiano Ronaldo’s final match on home soil, head coach Roberto Martinez has insisted that the legendary forward is focused solely on helping the team and not on what the future may hold.

Ronaldo, 41, is expected to feature in Wednesday’s warm-up fixture in Leiria before Portugal begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. While many view the tournament as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s last opportunity to lift the coveted trophy, Martinez said neither the captain nor the squad is thinking beyond the present.

Praising Ronaldo’s professionalism and commitment, Martinez said the veteran continues to set the standard for the entire squad.

“Our captain sets an example in everything he does. He gives his all, 24 hours a day, to help the national team,” Martinez said, as quoted by ESPN.

The Portugal coach added that discussing the future serves little purpose given the unpredictable nature of football.

“Our captain and the rest of the players are not thinking about the future. We don’t know what can happen because players can get injured and there are decisions that are out of their hands.”

“The focus is on training, being the best, putting the concepts into practice and showing pride in wearing the shirt. That’s the example he sets. His sole aim is to use tomorrow to improve,” he added.

Ronaldo gears up for a record sixth World Cup

Ronaldo is set to become one of the few players to feature in six FIFA World Cups, continuing a remarkable international career that began in 2003.

The Portugal captain has scored 143 goals in 227 international appearances, making him the highest goalscorer in men’s international football. He also holds the record for the most international hat-tricks, with 10.

Ahead of the friendly, Ronaldo shared pictures from Portugal’s training camp on Instagram, appearing relaxed and in high spirits as the squad intensified preparations for the tournament.

Portugal eye strong start to World Cup campaign

Fresh from winning the UEFA Nations League and with Ronaldo having recently helped Al Nassr secure the Saudi Pro League title, Portugal head into the World Cup with confidence.

They will begin their Group K campaign against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Houston on June 17, before facing Uzbekistan on June 23 at the same venue. Portugal will conclude the group stage against Colombia in Miami on June 27.

With Ronaldo still leading from the front, Portugal will hope to make a serious push for the one major trophy that has eluded their iconic captain.
