The Mumbai Indians are keeping their cards close to their chest over Rohit Sharma’s availability ahead of their clash against the Punjab Kings, with no clear update from the team management so far.

At the pre-match press conference, the franchise confirmed that a final call on Rohit is yet to be taken.

“The medical team and management are still assessing him. We will know when they know,” a team spokesperson said.

Injury concern clouds MI camp

The former MI skipper is nursing a hamstring injury sustained during their previous outing against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he retired hurt mid-innings.

Rohit skipped training on Tuesday and only made a brief appearance towards the end of Wednesday’s session, with his right hamstring strapped. He did not bat, further fuelling concerns over his fitness. Reports suggest scans have been conducted, adding to doubts about the severity of the injury.

The lack of clarity from the MI camp has only intensified speculation that the five-time IPL-winning captain could miss not just Thursday’s game, but potentially more fixtures.

Rohit’s absence would be a significant blow at a crucial stage of the tournament. He had begun IPL 2026 in strong form, scoring 78 against Kolkata Knight Riders and following it up with 35 versus Delhi Capitals.

If ruled out, MI may have to reshuffle their combination. One option could be bringing in Quinton de Kock at the top, though that would force a rethink of their overseas balance, potentially pushing Sherfane Rutherford out of the playing XI.

Another possibility being discussed is using Rohit as an impact substitute in a limited role, depending on his fitness.

For now, MI remains tight-lipped, with a final decision on Rohit’s availability expected closer to match time.
