Bhutan’s left-arm spinner Sonam Yeshey has made history by taking 8 wickets in a T20 match, international or otherwise, becoming the first bowler to do so.

Yeshey, who is 22 years old, achieved the feat during the third T20I against Myanmar in Gelephu on Friday, December 26. He showcased the stunning spell of 8 wickets for 7 runs in four overs, skittling Myanmar for just 45 runs in 9.2 overs while they chased Bhutan’s modest 127 for 9 in the third match of a five-match bilateral series.

ICC shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), praising Yeshey’s bowling spell.

In the final game of the series scheduled for Monday, 29 December, Bhutan completed a dominant sweep, defeating Myanmar by 84 runs. Bhutan posted 139 for 8 in their 20 overs, anchored by a top score of 74 from 56 balls by Tenjin Rabgey. Yeshey has been quite impressive in the heavily one-sided series. He did not take any further wickets in the last match, finishing the series with a total of 12 wickets.

The best figures in the men’s T20 internationals were seven-wicket hauls, which have been achieved only twice. Syazrul Idrus took 7 for 8 for Malaysia against China in 2023, and Ali Dawood took 7 for 19 for Bahrain against Bhutan in 2025.

In the international matches, the seven-wicket feat has been recorded twice, by Colin Ackermann (7 for 18 for Leicestershire against Birmingham Bears in 2019) and Taskin Ahmed (7 for 19 for Durbar Rajshahi against Dhaka Capitals in 2025).

In women’s cricket, Indonesia’s Rohmalia set the benchmark in 2024 against Mongolia, taking an extraordinary 7 for 0, making it the best bowling figures in women’s T20Is and T20s.

The women’s T20 internationals have several seven-wicket hauls, including Frederique Overdijk (7 for 3 for the Netherlands vs France), Alison Stocks (7 for 3 for Argentina vs Peru), and Samanthi Dunukedeniya (7 for 15 for Cyprus vs the Czech Republic).

Yeshey, who debuted for Bhutan in July 2022 against Malaysia, propelled his tally to 37 wickets in 34 T20 internationals. He now holds the record for the best bowling figures in T20 history, surpassing both men’s and women’s previous records.
