KOLKATA, 28 SEPT: Chief Minister Miss Mamata Banerjee today asked sports minister Mr Madan Mitra and his colleague Mr Arup Biswas, the state youth services minister to frame a sports and youth policy to ensure proper upbringing of children in their respective fields.
She was speaking at the inaugural programme of the state sports department’s website, www.wbsports.in at Netaji Indoor Stadium today where eminent sports personalities including former India Cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly were felicitated and local clubs were given money for their infrastructure development.
Miss Banerjee said the state government is setting up a sports academy and a football academy where children and youths will get training in their respective fields of sports. The academies will be a residential one and there will be facilities for their education as well.
Children of various age groups, who were chosen to train at the football academy, were present in today&’s programme. Miss Banerjee directed the sports and the youth services minister to assure that they all support a better future.
“At the same time the state government have to take responsibility to assure that they get established in their life by securing a job," she said, adding that a new sports and youth policy is needed for the purpose. She said she had found around 700 women football clubs participating in the football tournament organised in Junglemahal a few months ago.
Thus, she asked the concerned minister to provide financial support to the selected women clubs in the similar manner as the state government has been supporting 4,395 clubs since last year.
Today 2,000 clubs received cheques of Rs 2 lakh each.
The state government today felicitated 13 sportsmen including eminent hockey player Mr Vece Paes, footballer Mr Amal Dutta and footballer Prasun Banerjee, who is an MP from Howrah with Krira Guru Award and received an amount of Rs 1 lakh each.
Twenty-six players received Khel Samman Award and Rs 50,000 each. Twenty-three sportsmen received Banglar Gourav Award and Rs 1 lakh each. Sourav Ganguly and Leander Paes have been felicitated with Lifetime Achievement Award and each of them received Rs 5 lakh.
Miss Banerjee said that the state government would give Lifetime Achievement Awards to some more players.
