The 22-year-old’s dunking video has, perhaps unsurprisingly, gone viral on Instagram.

Cristiano Ronaldo may be the one footballer who evokes comparisons with NBA players due to his prodigious leap, but his Real Madrid teammate Marco Asensio has taken to Instagram to show he’s got the skills too with a video of him executing a perfect slam dunk on his backyard rim.

While it must be noted that the rim looks to be far lower than the regulation ones used by the NBA (10 feet), the fact that the 5’11 Asensio (in LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers jersey no less!) can soar high and execute a picture-perfect dunk on a roughly eight feet rim without breaking a sweat, will just add to the hype surrounding the 22-year-old.

A product of Mallorca’s youth academy, Asensio joined Los Blancos in 2014 but had to wait until last season to really come into his own.

The versatile winger’s displays in the UEFA Champions League, in particular, made the world sit up and take notice of the prodigy as Zinedine Zidane’s men romped to a second consecutive continental crown.

Asensio started the current season on a bright note, scoring two golazos in Real’s stunning Spanish Super Cup triumph over arch-rivals Barcelona but a lack of form and niggling injuries saw him relegated to the sidelines.

However, as was the case last year, Asensio’s come to the fore as the business end of the campaign has come around and the Spaniard played a crucial role in Real’s 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.

Competition with club-record signing Gareth Bale for a starting spot hasn’t been easy, but many Madridistas have backed the Spaniard to come good on his immense talent, sooner rather than later.

Asensio will next be in action when Real pay Las Palmas a visit on the weekend for their La Liga fixture, but it is likely that Zidane will rest most of his stars for a continental quarter-final with Juventus looms large on the horizon.

Real are out of contention for silverware in every competition save the UEFA Champions League, where they are attempting to script history by becoming the first time to complete a three-peat.
