Indian skipper Virat Kohli achieved a rare feat on the second day of the first Test match against West Indies at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium (SCA) in Rajkot on Friday.

Kohli became the first ever Indian cricketer to score 1000 runs in the longest format of the game in three consecutive years. The Delhi batsman took nine matches and 17 innings to cross the landmark of 1000 Test runs in 2018 calendar year at an average of over 59 and his highest score is 153.

The stylish right-handed batsman is also the only batter to score 1000 runs in this calendar year. English skipper Joe Root is second in the list with 719 runs from 10 matches followed by South Africa’s Aiden Markram (660 runs from nine matches).

On Friday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to Twitter, stating, “He becomes the only Indian player to score 1,000+ Test runs in three consecutive calendar years #KingKohli.”

Meanwhile, Kohli also notched up his 24th Test ton in the match, in the process becoming the second fastest batsman to reach the milestone. Australian cricket great Donald Bradman is the only cricketer who has taken fewer innings to reach this milestone.

Kohli also went past former Australian skipper Steve Smith (23) to go second in the list of centurions among active players. Virat Kohli is now only behind South Africa’s Hashim Amla (28).
