Brazil booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 with a commanding 3-0 victory over Scotland at Miami Stadium, powered by a Vinicius Junior masterclass, a Matheus Cunha strike and the long-awaited return of Neymar.
Vinicius scored twice in the first half as the five-time world champions secured top spot in Group C and set up a Round of 32 clash against the runners-up of Group F in Houston on June 30.
For Scotland, however, hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time remain uncertain. They currently sit third in the group on three points with a goal difference of minus three and must await results elsewhere.
Vinicius also etched his name into Brazilian football history, becoming only the fifth player from the nation to score in all three group-stage matches of a FIFA World Cup. He joins an illustrious list featuring Jairzinho (1970), Romario (1994), Ronaldo (2002) and Rivaldo (2002) — with Brazil going on to lift the trophy on each of those occasions.
Brazil wasted little time asserting their dominance. Pressing high and forcing mistakes, they pinned Scotland deep inside their own half from the opening whistle.
Scotland’s task became even tougher in the sixth minute when a costly defensive error handed Brazil the lead. Under pressure from Rayan, centre-back Scott McKenna’s attempted clearance was blocked and fell kindly to Vinicius, who calmly rounded goalkeeper Angus Gunn before slotting home.
The Real Madrid forward thought he had doubled the lead shortly afterwards after dispossessing Jack Hendry and finishing clinically, but a VAR review ruled the goal out for a foul in the build-up.
Scotland briefly settled into the contest but were punished again in first-half stoppage time. Bruno Guimaraes delivered a teasing cross that evaded Gunn’s reach, allowing Vinicius to head home his second goal of the evening.
Gunn prevented the scoreline from becoming even more lopsided with a string of impressive saves, denying Rayan and Vinicius on multiple occasions. However, Brazil eventually found a third goal when Guimaraes turned provider once again, setting up Matheus Cunha to fire past the goalkeeper at the near post.
Scotland pushed for a consolation goal late on, but Alisson Becker produced crucial saves from Lewis Ferguson’s free-kick and two efforts from Scott McTominay to preserve Brazil’s clean sheet.
The night’s celebrations were completed by the return of Neymar, who came off the bench late in the match. The veteran forward’s appearance marked his fourth consecutive FIFA World Cup and drew a rapturous reception from the Brazilian supporters in attendance.
