Ireland stormed to a commanding 96-run victory over Oman in Colombo on Friday to register their first win of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The match unfolded in two contrasting phases. Oman controlled the early proceedings, but Ireland, led superbly by captain Lorcan Tucker, unleashed a dramatic late assault. Recovering from 64/4 in 7.3 overs, Ireland powered their way to 235/5 in 20 overs, the highest total of this World Cup and the second-highest score in T20 World Cup history.

After choosing to field, Oman immediately turned to spin and found early success. Left-arm spinner Shakeel Ahmed dismantled the Irish top order, bowling Tim Tector with a skidder, forcing Ross Adair into a miscue and then breaching Harry Tector’s defence to hit the top of off stump.

With Ireland in trouble, Tucker and Gareth Delany stabilised the innings. Once settled, the pair launched a counterattack, adding 101 runs for the fifth wicket. Delany scored 56 off 30 balls, striking three fours and four sixes.

Tucker then took complete control of the game with a remarkable unbeaten 94 off 51 balls, the highest individual score of this edition. George Dockrell provided the late fireworks, smashing 35 off just nine deliveries, including three consecutive sixes to end the innings. Ireland finished with 13 sixes and 21 fours, scoring a staggering 86 runs in the final four overs.

Chasing a daunting target, Oman stumbled early, losing their captain Jatinder Singh and Ashish Odedara inside three overs.

A brief revival came through Aamir Kaleem and Hammad Mirza, who stitched together a brisk 73-run stand for the third wicket. Kaleem struck 50 off 29 balls while Mirza contributed 46 off 37. However, Kaleem’s dismissal triggered a collapse as Oman slid from 97/3 to 139 all out in 18 overs.

Ireland’s bowlers backed up the batting effort impressively. Left-arm pacer Josh Little returned figures of 3/16 to dismantle the middle and lower order, while Matthew Humphreys and Ben McCarthy picked up two wickets apiece to seal a comprehensive victory.
