Amid the rising uncertainty of the Pakistan Super League 2026, Australian cricket star Steve Smith arrived in Lahore on Monday, despite a chilling warning from the armed opposition group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar targeting overseas players to not attend the league.

The group issued a statement claiming that the safety of foreign cricketers “cannot be guaranteed” and asked players, including David Warner, Steve Smith, Daryl Mitchell and others, to “withdraw immediately” from the tournament.

A video circulating on social media shows Smith moving through Lahore airport under heavy security, underscoring the seriousness of the threat.

Earlier, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar said it is not opposed to cricket as a sport but argued that the prevailing security situation in Pakistan is unsuitable for staging a high-profile tournament involving international players.

“We want to advise the relevant cricket boards not to send their players to Pakistan. If something happens to them, it will not be our responsibility. We have already issued our warning,” a commander of the group told The Sunday Guardian.

When pressed about their response if players ignored the warning, the commander added:

“We will do whatever is in our capacity, but we will not let the matches happen. We will do our best to ensure that the tournament is disrupted and the players do not take to the field.”

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing to host the PSL behind closed doors in Karachi and Lahore, citing the ongoing West Asia conflict and rising fuel costs. While the PSL roster includes other prominent internationals such as David Warner, Adam Zampa, Moeen Ali, and Devon Conway, Smith’s arrival marks a dramatic opening to a tournament shadowed by security concerns.

The season is scheduled to start on March 26, with all eyes on how the PCB and foreign players navigate the unfolding situation.
