The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has taken a significant step towards reviving Formula 1 and strengthening India’s motorsports ecosystem by announcing the formation of a dedicated task force to prepare a long-term roadmap for the sport’s growth in the country.

The decision was taken following a high-level meeting chaired by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, which was attended by ministry officials, representatives of the national motorsports federation and other key stakeholders.

Discussions focused on the current state of motorsports in India, the challenges limiting its expansion and the opportunities available to establish the country as a major destination for international racing events.

As part of the initiative, the ministry will constitute a four-to-five-member task force that will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the motorsports landscape in India. The panel will examine the existing ecosystem and identify infrastructural, operational and policy-related gaps that need to be addressed to ensure the sustainable development of the sport.

“A task force will be constituted for the revival of Formula 1, with a focus on infrastructure development, a comprehensive policy framework, and a structured public-private partnership model to strengthen motorsports in India,” Sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.

The task force will also study the wider benefits of hosting premier international motorsport events, including Formula 1. Areas such as economic impact, tourism growth, global visibility and investment opportunities will form part of its assessment.

Based on its findings, the committee will recommend priority areas for intervention, suggest infrastructure upgrades and propose an operational framework to support the growth of motorsports across the country. The recommendations will then be submitted to the Sports Ministry for further action.

Using the report, the ministry plans to develop a comprehensive national policy framework aimed at promoting motorsports at multiple levels. The proposed framework is expected to focus on infrastructure creation, talent identification and development, event-hosting capabilities and governance mechanisms.

Recognising the growing popularity of motorsports in India, the government also plans to strengthen regional and grassroots centres to create a sustainable talent pipeline and improve access to training and competition opportunities.

The ministry will further explore Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models to support infrastructure development, event management and investment mobilisation, while integrating motorsports into its broader ‘Play in India’ vision to enhance the country’s sporting profile on the global stage.
