Puyol return
Barcelona’s club doctor Ricard Pruna said on Wednesday that he was hopeful that Carles Puyol would be fit to start pre-season training after the defender had a cyst removed from his knee. The operation was just the latest in a long list of injury setbacks for the 35-year-old, who has not played since undergoing more serious knee surgery back in March.
Blake pulls out
Injury concerns have forced double Olympic silver medallist Yohan Blake to pull out of the Jamaica National Senior Championship scheduled to begin on Thursday. Manager Cubie Seegobin says the Jamaican sprinter has not fully recovered from a hamstring injury he suffered in April to run the 200m rounds this week. Blake is expected to concentrate his efforts on defending his 100 m title at this summer’s World Championships in Moscow.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has urged protesters flooding the streets of Brazil to stop linking their anger against the government to the Confederations Cup. Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets of several Brazilian cities to call for more investment in basic services, with some questioning the cost of staging the 2014 World Cup. Zimbabwe series
India will start their five match One-Day Internationals series against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club on 24 July. Harare hosts the first three matches of the series while the final two ODIs are to be held at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Schedule: first ODI – 24 July; second ODI – 26 July; third ODI – 28 July; fourth ODI – 31 July; fifth ODI – 3 August.
Anand loses
Viswanthan Anand’s poor run continued as he suffered his second straight loss, succumbing to American Hikaru Nakamura in the sixth round of the Tal memorial chess tournament now in progress in Russia. Earlier, Anand went down to Magnus Carlsen of Norway. He is now No 8 in world rankings.
