Sania Mirza continued her impressive run as she captured her fourth title of the season and 18th overall with Cara Black of Zimbabwe, recording a come-from-behind win over Liezel Huber and Hao Ching Chan to lift the Pan Pacific Open trophy, in Tokyo on Saturday.

Zareen shines

Reigning Junior World Champion Nikhat Zareen (54kg) continued her winning streak at the AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships as she powered through to the final round of the championship. After her stupendous performance Friday, the 17-year-old is now assured of a silver medal and will stake a claim for her second world title. 

Golfers disappoint
Indian golfers continued to disappoint at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship as they were all in danger of missing the cut, which in this event is applied after three rounds. Though the scoring has been rather good, with the leader Tom Lewis placed at 15-under for 36 holes, the best Indian was SSP Chowrasia (69-73) at three-under in 108th place, while Jeev Milkha Singh (71-72) at one-under and Gaganjeet Bhullar (72-75) at three-over were further down.

Injury blow
Two-time FIFA world player of the year Ronaldinho could miss December’s Club World Cup due to an injury. The 33-year-old tore the muscle in his left groin while training for Brazilian outfit Atletico Mineiro Friday, reports Xinhua.

Disciplinary panel
Former 100-metre sprint world record holder Asafa Powell and his MVP teammate Sherone Simpson are to face the disciplinary panel of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission in January next year. Simpson will appear Jan 7 and 8 while Powell’s hearing is scheduled for Jan 14-15, reports CMC.

Imperious win

Prosenjit Chakraborty scored a hat-trick as India thrashed Bhutan 8-1 in a group match of the AFC U-16 Championship Qualifiers here and keep themselves in contention for a final round berth. Besides Prosenjit, who struck in the 13th, 31st and 48th minutes, the other scorers are Jayananda Singh (4th), Jerry Lalrinzuala (20th), Bedashwor Singh (33rd and 47th), Edmund Lalrindika (74th) and Nuruddin (75th).

Gold for Peter
Hungary’s world record holder Sidi Peter won the 10m Air Rifle gold medal at the Sanjay Kakade Group Gun for Glory shooting championship, being held at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex. Peter, who has entered into the event on invitation, had to shoot in the qualification round today, as his rifle was held back by customs in Mumbai.
