South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams dies at 25, weeks after World Cup appearance

South Africa international Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing Bafana Bafana at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026.

The midfielder, who played in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches before being an unused substitute in the Round of 32 defeat to Canada, was widely regarded as one of the country’s brightest young footballers.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, led the tributes, describing Adams’ death as a devastating loss for the nation.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams. South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international,” McKenzie said in a statement.

The minister also urged the public to refrain from speculation, stressing that the cause of Adams’ death has not yet been confirmed and that any official information would be released by the relevant authorities.

The South African Football Players Union also paid tribute, remembering Adams as a player who represented his country with pride on the biggest stage.

“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large,” the union said.

Adams made his senior international debut in 2022 and established himself as a regular in the national team. At club level, he represented Mamelodi Sundowns, where he was considered one of the Premier Soccer League’s most promising midfielders.

His final appearance for South Africa came during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured throughout the group stage as Bafana Bafana advanced to the knockout rounds for the first time in the expanded tournament before bowing out against co-hosts Canada.
